The Spiritual Power of Nasheeds: Healing Hearts Through Divine Love
June 9, 2025As-Salaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh,
In the tradition of the Awliya (saints) and the righteous scholars, nasheeds hold a sacred place as a means of purifying the heart, invoking divine blessings, and strengthening our connection with the Beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Today, we explore the wisdom of Shaykh Nurjan Mirahmadi (ق), the blessings of reciting nasheeds in one’s own language, and the transformative power of gatherings of remembrance (majalis al-dhikr).
The Teachings of Shaykh Nurjan Mirahmadi (ق) on Nasheed
Shaykh Nurjan Mirahmadi (ق), a contemporary guide on the path of Sufism and divine love, emphasized that nasheeds are a form of spiritual medicine. He taught that when sung with sincerity, they:
- Open the heart to the light of the Prophet ﷺ.
- Remove spiritual diseases such as pride, hatred, and heedlessness.
- Attract the mercy of Allah ﷻ by invoking blessings (salawat) upon His Messenger ﷺ.
He often reminded his students:
“When you sing of the Prophet ﷺ with love, his Nur (light) enters your soul, and the angels surround your gathering.”
The Blessings of Reciting Nasheeds in One’s Own Language
While Arabic nasheeds like the Burdah Sharif carry immense blessings, Shaykh Nurjan (ق) encouraged believers to express their love in their native tongue. Why?
- Deeper Emotional Connection: The heart understands love best in the language it was raised with.
- Increased Accessibility: Not everyone understands classical Arabic, but everyone deserves to feel the love of the Prophet ﷺ.
- Revival of Local Traditions: Just as Al-Andalus had its own unique style of nasheed, every culture can develop its own beautiful expressions of devotion.
“All languages are beloved to Allah if they speak of His Messenger ﷺ with sincerity.”
The Barakah of Majalis al-Dhikr (Gatherings of Remembrance)
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whenever a group of people gather for the remembrance of Allah, the angels surround them, mercy covers them, tranquility descends upon them, and Allah mentions them to those near Him.” (Muslim)
When nasheeds are recited in gatherings:
- The Presence of Angels: They join in sending salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ.
- Hearts Soften: Sins are lifted, and divine love replaces worldly attachments.
- Unity of the Ummah: Just as the Companions (عليه السلام) sang together in Medina, we revive their tradition today.
A Call to Revive the Tradition
Let us follow in the footsteps of:
- Imam Al-Busiri (عليه السلام), who healed through poetry,
- The Andalusian mystics, who sang of divine love,
- Shaykh Nurjan Mirahmadi (ق), who taught that nasheeds awaken the soul.
Organize nasheed circles, recite the Burdah, compose in your language, and fill your homes with the love of the Prophet ﷺ. For where his name is sung, his light shines brightest.
Wa Salaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
